In conjunction with the Samuel Lawrence Foundation, Two by the Sea seeks to inform Southern California about the current state of its environmental wellbeing. TBTS springs from the lack of public understanding surrounding nuclear waste and its effects — which, if left unchecked, can be devastating to people, animals and entire ecosystems.
Many people pass the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station’s twin domes on the I-5 without knowing what they are – without knowing there is nuclear waste buried right under their noses. Like many other issues, if no one knew about them, nothing would change.
TBTS was founded in 2020 by two San Diego-based journalists who rely on scientists, data and research to inform each story. Since neither of us come from scientific backgrounds, we know this stuff is not always easy to grasp — but people have a right to know the decisions being made that directly impact their homes and livelihoods. It is our mission to break down complex scientific language in ways that ordinary people can understand.
